Pattaya Golf – Laem Chabang Country Club
I had the pleasure this morning of playing golf at the Laem Chabang International Country Club not far from Pattaya and boy what a great course it is! As the morning dew lined the fairways and greens creating a crystallising effect on the course, we teed off at 6:50 am Thailand time, which I always find the best time to play golf amidst such a sun-kissed tropical climate. The flowers were in full bloom, the club’s maintenance teams were out in full force watering, trimming and sculpturing away like Vidal Sassoon. It’s been a good few months since we had proper rainfall in the region, but you wouldn’t know that by looking at the playing conditions.
You know you are on a top quality course when each hole has an individual name as opposed to just a number in Augusta National-esque fashion. Everything was picture-perfect, and I even managed to get seven pars, but please don’t ask me about the other 11 holes where 3-putts and shots left in bunkers time and time again were aplenty. Somebody once told me that the game was called golf because all the other 4-letter words were taken!
Jack Nicklaus designed the 36 holes at Laem Chabang
Jack Nicklaus designed the 36 holes at Laem Chabang, and every time we landed in yet another bunker we cursed and swore at the name of this 18-time significant winning golfing demigod. But he probably wasn’t even listening.
On a side note, the two caddies from this morning didn’t speak much English, but their reading of the subtle slopes on the Laem Chabang greens was exceptional. The greens don’t have massive hills, but as I said, they are very delicate and tricky. Sometime you just can’t decide which way they are going to swing, but the caddies nailed it every time.
Although many regard Siam Country Club as the premier course in the region, and I wouldn’t argue with that, but I prefer Laem Chabang, due to its beautiful surroundings.
